Welcome to the Havenstone family

Here, every rescue becomes family.

A little kindness can change the course of a life. Nestled in the rolling foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, Havenstone Horse Rescue is a safe and loving home for animals who need another chance.

The Havenstone Story

Some arrive needing rehabilitation and healing. Others simply need a place where they can finally feel safe — and remain for the rest of their lives. All of them become family.

Here, rescue is only the beginning.

From rescue to sanctuary

Every journey is different. Some animals stay a season, some stay forever. All of them are safe.

We answer the call

Horses, pigs, sheep and birds come to us from neglect, auction and owners out of options — whatever shape they arrive in.

We give them time

Feed and hay, veterinary and farrier care, and quiet days. Healing the body first — then, slowly, trust.

We keep them in the family

For many, Havenstone is home for life. Once you're family, you never have to start over again.

A family story

Luloo learned to trust again.

“There was no rushing Luloo.”

She arrived as a frightened, completely unsocialized yearling from an unmonitored breeding facility, her mane dreadlocked and her tail so matted it looked like a fifth leg. With patience, kindness and time, she learned that people could be safe. Today she's four, thriving with her horse family — and one of Megan's best friends.

Sanctuary beyond the barn

Where compassion & nature nurture & renew

Our pastures, woods, lake, streams and trails support a whole and growing ecosystem. Pairs of eagles soar overhead. Hawks patrol the fields. Swans glide across the lake. Blue herons, beavers and turtles call Havenstone home, too.

The Havenstone Tree of Life

Grow the family tree

We're painting a Tree of Life mural at Havenstone — and every leaf will carry the name of a family who helped it grow.

Give $1,000 or more and your name — or the name of someone you love — is painted on a leaf, part of the Havenstone family for good.
